The experience
The day starts with hotel or port pickup, then moves into Santiago's center where you'll walk past the neoclassical Metropolitan Cathedral (built 1753–1799), see La Moneda Palace where the President's offices sit, and stop at the Central Market, named one of National Geographic's top ten food markets worldwide. You'll pass Paseo Ahumada, the four-block shopping street, and see the historic San Francisco Church, consecrated in 1622. The guide points out the city's layout from its founding in 1541 and explains how Santiago has grown into the capital it is today.
From downtown you head toward Maipo Valley and Undurraga Winery, which became the first Chilean vineyard to export to the United States. The cellar building dates to 1885. A guided tour takes you through the winery's park, where you'll pass the Aliwen corner (a recreation of Chile's southern vegetation with Mapuche totem poles), then into the vineyards and the historic cellars themselves. The wine tasting includes four reserve wines.
After the winery, the minivan returns you to San Antonio port (or Valparaiso, depending on your booking) around 3:00 pm or at a time you arrange. The tour runs 7 to 8 hours total. Transport is by air-conditioned minivan. Each traveler can bring up to two suitcases. Cruise passengers must provide ship name, docking time, disembarkation time and re-boarding time when booking.
