The experience
The tour opens at Moon Valley with a climb up the Great Dune to see the layered geology that inspired its name, then down to the Three Marys: rock formations the Atacameño people called "Los Vigilantes," the watchers. You walk through the Victoria Mine to see the remains of salt extraction, then settle into a prepared rest spot in Death Valley for lunch and a moment to absorb the scale of the landscape around you.
Night brings stargazing with an expert guide who explains constellations, galaxies and how the Atacameño culture read the sky. Telescopes let you see Saturn's rings, the Moon's craters and cosmic dust in nebulae: details the naked eye misses. The Atacama Desert ranks among the world's clearest skies for this reason, and the guide's talk grounds what you're seeing in both astronomy and local history.
Day three starts before dawn for El Tatio Geysers, the world's highest geyser field at 4,320 meters. You walk among roughly 80 active geysers and 30 springs in full eruption, bathed in steam and the light of early morning, then warm up with hot drinks and breakfast at altitude. The afternoon takes you to Cejar Lagoon, where the salt concentration is so high you float without effort: the same buoyancy effect as the Dead Sea. You also visit the Eyes of the Salt Flat and Lagoon Tebenquinche on the way. Day two branches into the altiplano: Toconao village, Chaxa Lagoon, the Tropic of Capricorn marker, and the highland lagoons of Miñiques and Miscanti, where you watch for flamingos, guanacos, vicuñas and if you're lucky, foxes and viscachas.

Is this one for you?The tour starts before dawn at El Tatio and involves walking at high altitude (4,320 meters), so an early wake-up and moderate fitness help you get the most from it. The pace is built around the geysers and the landscape rather than rushed stops, which means you have time to absorb each place but also spend full days in the vehicle and on your feet.
