The experience
The tour starts with hotel pickup at 8am and travels west toward the Cordillera de Domeyko, a mountain range that runs parallel to the Andes. Your first stop is Yerbas Buenas, where one of the region's most significant concentrations of petroglyphs and pictographs covers the rocks: carvings left by indigenous caravans that traveled through these territories hundreds of years ago. The town itself still practices agriculture and llama grazing, anchoring the landscape to its living past.
From there, the route crosses through Matancilla, a sector with its own flora and fauna, before reaching Rainbow Valley itself. The valley gets its name from the bands of color visible in the surrounding hills: earth tones, reds, browns, greens, whites and yellows layered across the rock faces. Combined with white salt deposits and the desert sky, the geological striations create a landscape that shifts as you move through it. You'll walk a circuit of roughly an hour through this formation, then reach a viewpoint overlooking Rainbow Canyon where the full sweep of the colored hills comes into view.
Breakfast (bread, cured meats, jams, coffee, tea, cakes and fruit) is served in the heart of the valley before the walking circuit. The minivan is air-conditioned for the drive, and you're dropped back at your hotel or the city center where you were picked up. The whole day runs five to six hours, leaving your afternoon free.
Is this one for you?Five to six hours leaves your afternoon open for other activities in San Pedro de Atacama. If you want to combine geology and archaeology in a single morning without a full-day commitment, this tour fits that window.
