The experience
The route traces the northern shore of the lake, framed by the Osorno Volcano and surrounded by native forest. You start in Llanquihue, known for its cured meats and as the birthplace of the Maullín River: a stop on the old Colonos' Route that brought German settlers to the region. From there the tour moves to Frutillar, a town that emerged in 1856 as a shipping dock and still carries the look of Bavaria. You can either visit the German Colonial Museum to see how the colonists lived, or walk the waterfront to Teatro del Lago, where the annual Frutillar Musical Weeks draw audiences from around the world.
The next stop is Puerto Octay, also on the northern shore and marked by German influence. It was the first port for agricultural products heading to Osorno. You walk through its old streets and Plaza de Armas before heading toward the Las Cascadas sector. The drive passes panoramic views of the northern lake, and then arrives in Ensenada, where you have time for lunch (not included in the tour price). On the return to Puerto Varas, the guide stops at viewpoints where you can photograph the lake and the volcanoes.
