The Experience

I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure if I’d actually stand up on skis in Farellones — let alone slide down a hill without falling. But that’s kind of the fun, right? We met our group outside Parque Arauco (it’s this big mall in Las Condes — easy to spot with all the taxis and early-morning chatter). Our guide, Valentina, handed out these thick jackets that smelled faintly like last week’s snow. There was a kid next to me who looked about seven and was already bragging he’d beat his dad at tubing. I just tried not to drop my gloves.

The drive up into the Andes is twisty — you get that weird feeling in your ears as you climb higher. The mountains looked almost too white under the sun, and every so often someone would point out a llama or a patch of wildflowers poking through the snow. When we finally got to Farellones Park, it felt like stepping into another world: families laughing over sleigh rides, teenagers shrieking down the tubing run, even a couple trying to take selfies while their glasses fogged up. Our ski instructor (I think his name was Nico?) had this patient way of explaining things — he showed us how to clip our boots in and didn’t laugh when I fell over immediately. Well, maybe just a little.

I never thought I’d enjoy falling on my face so much. After a while, my legs stopped shaking and I actually managed a slow glide down one of the beginner slopes. The air tasted cold and sharp — you could smell pine trees somewhere nearby if you paid attention between all the sunscreen and hot chocolate wafting from the café. At one point Valentina pointed out the panoramic chairlift and told us stories about her own first time skiing here as a kid. It made me feel less embarrassed about moving like a newborn deer.

On the way back down to Santiago, everyone looked tired but happy — cheeks red from wind or maybe just laughing so much. I kept thinking about that moment when everything went quiet on top of the slope before pushing off for real. Maybe it’s silly but I still feel proud about it now.
