The experience
The tour starts with a 2-hour drive north from Santiago to Puquén Biopark in Los Molles, a protected conservation site shaped by coastal geology. You walk a leisurely 3-hour circuit through natural gardens where steppe shrubs and abundant flowers create a shifting palette: spring brings the most color. The biopark's main draw is the Puquén blowhole, where high tide forces water up a vertical shaft in dramatic blasts, and a nearby island called Lobera hosts a large colony of South American sea lions whose calls carry across the water.
In the afternoon, you drive south about 30 minutes through the coastal towns of Papudo and Zapallar to reach Cachagua. A short 1.5-mile walk follows the coastline past Las Cujas beach to Cachagua beach itself. From the sand, you'll spot Cachagua Island roughly 300 feet offshore: a Natural Monument and refuge for 14 coastal and oceanic bird species. The Humboldt Penguin, endemic to the Humboldt Current, is the headline sighting. If conditions align, you might also glimpse the Chungungo, the world's smallest marine mammal. Binoculars are provided. The return drive to your Santiago hotel takes about 2 hours.
Lunch consists of two sandwiches, two fruits, dry fruit, chocolate, two cereal bars, and bottled water, eaten somewhere along the route. Your guide speaks English and Spanish and travels with you throughout the day in an air-conditioned vehicle.

Is this one for you? This is a private tour, so you travel as your own group: ideal for families or friends who want to move at their own pace without joining strangers. The fixed route and timing mean you hit both the biopark's blowhole and the penguin refuge in a single day, which a self-guided visit to the coast would not easily allow.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years); Child (3 to 11 years); Infant (under 3): free.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the Puquén blowhole and when does it actually happen?
Puquén is a vertical shaft in the biopark's rocky coast where high tide forces seawater upward in powerful blasts of water and wind. It occurs during high tide. The timing depends on the day's tidal cycle, which your guide will know.
How close do you actually get to the Humboldt Penguins at Cachagua?
Cachagua Island sits roughly 300 feet offshore, so you observe the penguins from the beach with binoculars provided. They inhabit a protected refuge on the island, so no landing or closer approach is part of the tour.
Is this tour suitable for someone who's not a strong walker?
The Puquén walk is described as leisurely and takes 3 hours over a 1.4-mile circuit. The Cachagua walk is 1.5 miles one-way along a coastal trail. Both are easy-paced, and the tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels, though the total day runs 10 hours including driving time.
What should I bring for a full day on the Central Coast?
Wear layers and bring sun protection. The coast is exposed and weather can shift. The tour provides lunch, water, and binoculars. Wear comfortable walking shoes suitable for coastal terrain and bring a camera or phone for wildlife.
How much of the day is actually driving versus walking?
Driving accounts for roughly 4 hours total: 2 hours north to Puquén, 30 minutes south to Cachagua, and 2 hours back to Santiago. Walking time is 3 hours at Puquén and 1.5 miles at Cachagua, with time for observation and lunch built in.
