The experience
The Delgadinho road is the centerpiece: a single-lane basalt route built into the mountainside in 1962, connecting the north and south of Santo Antão with passages so narrow and canyons so deep that the drive itself is the reason people book this tour. Your guide meets you at the Porto Novo port exit and drives you up to the Cova volcanic crater at the highest point, where the view opens across the entire island. The road passes through pine, eucalyptus and acacia forest, and the adrenaline of the narrow passages is real. This is not a highway.
After the Delgadinho crossing, you stop at Ponta do Sol, a small fishing village on the island's northern tip with a history worth knowing, then drive the coastal road to Fontainhas for views before heading inland to Ribeira Grande, a colorful agricultural center set between two valleys. The route ends in Paúl, the greenest valley in Cape Verde, where water from the Cova Crater runs down to the sea. Here you visit the rum distillery and taste the local product: several flavors to try. The return to Porto Novo follows a newer road, and you catch the ferry back to Mindelo the same day.
The tour runs 8 to 10 hours total and includes the ferry crossing both ways, an air-conditioned vehicle, the guide, all fees and taxes, and liability insurance. A professional guide speaks English, Portuguese or French. Children from age 2 are welcome. The narrow road and mountain terrain mean this is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or poor cardiovascular health, though it suits all other fitness levels.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?

Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (2 to 17 years).
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the Delgadinho road actually like to drive on?
The Delgadinho is a single-lane basalt stone road built in 1962 with narrow passages and deep canyons running through it. The drive climbs to the Cova volcanic crater at the island's highest point, where you see the full mountainous landscape. The adrenaline comes from the narrowness and the views, not from speed.
Do I need to arrange my own ferry from Mindelo to Santo Antão?
No. Ferry tickets for both the outbound and return crossings are included in the tour price. Your guide meets you at the Porto Novo port when you arrive and takes you back to catch the ferry home the same day.
What happens at the rum distillery in Paúl valley?
You visit a working local distillery and taste Cape Verde rum in several flavors. Paúl is the greenest valley on the island because water flows down from the Cova Crater to the sea, and the distillery sits in that landscape.
How long is the full tour, and what time do I need to be ready?
The tour runs 8 to 10 hours from pickup at the harbor in Mindelo. Pickup and drop-off at the harbor are included, so you do not need separate transport to the port.
