The experience
Ponta do Sol is where the day starts: a fishing village of colorful houses right on the water. From there, the route climbs a rocky cliff road that hugs the ocean, then narrows into a steep mountain path carved into the ridge. The ascent brings you to Fontainhas, a small village perched so high that National Geographic listed it among the world's 10 villages with the best views. The path then descends steeply through three smaller villages (Corvo, Formiguinhas and Aranhas) before reaching Praia das Aranhas, a black sand beach where sea turtles nest.
At the beach, you stop to rest and eat. After that comes the longest stretch: a 2.5-hour hike between volcanic rocks and the ocean edge, following a narrow linear path to Cruzinha, another small fishing village on the coast. The total ascent and descent across the day is about 249 meters. The path is safe but narrow in places, and the difficulty is graded as difficult. You'll need strong cardiovascular fitness, good footwear, a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water. Once you reach Cruzinha, private transport takes you back to your accommodation.
A live guide travels with you in English, Spanish, Portuguese or French, and pickup from your hotel is included. The hike is not suitable for anyone with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or a fear of heights. If your pickup location is remote, an extra fee may apply.
