The experience
Your hotel pickup starts the day, and the drive climbs into the mountains toward Cova Natural Park. The first real stop is Cova de Paúl, Cape Verde's largest volcanic crater, where you stand above 1000 meters looking down into an extinct volcano. The crater floor is a vast round plain, green with agricultural fields tended by locals, and the scale of it (the sheer drop and the flatness below) is what makes the stop work. From there the route moves to Delgadin, a mountaintop where the valley of Ribeira da Torre opens below you, carved into natural towers by water and time.
The tour then passes through Povoacão and down into Ribeira de Torre, where banana trees and vegetable plots line the valley, before reaching the coastal village of Ponta de Sol. Fishermen work from small traditional boats here, and the shift from mountain to sea happens fast. Then comes Fontainhas, a village National Geographic listed among the ten best-viewed in the world. It sits on a mountainside reached by a single cobbled road that narrows along the cliffs, and the approach alone is the reason people book this stop. After lunch at a local spot, you head to Vale de Paúl, the greenest valley on the island, where thatched-roof houses dot the landscape and a working distillery lets you taste grogue, the local rum made here. The drive back passes through Sinagoga, Vila das Pombas and Janela Village before returning you to your accommodation.
You choose between a private tour or a shared group tour at checkout. Both include hotel pickup and a guide who speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese or French. Lunch is on your own, and while the distillery visit is part of the itinerary, the grogue tasting itself is optional. You can skip it if you prefer. The terrain is mountainous and the day is long, but the tour suits all fitness levels.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 11 years); Infant (under 3): free.
What is Cova de Paúl and why is it the main stop on this tour?
Cova de Paúl is Cape Verde's largest volcanic crater, sitting above 1000 meters high. The crater is extinct, and its floor is a vast flat plain used for agriculture: the scale and the views into it are what make it the centerpiece of the day.
How do I get to Fontainhas village, and what makes it special?
Fontainhas is reached by a single cobbled road embedded in the mountainside, with narrow passages along the cliffs. National Geographic listed it among the ten villages with the best views in the world, and the approach through those cliff-edge roads is part of the experience.
Is lunch included in the tour price?
Lunch is not included. You eat at a local restaurant during a break in the itinerary and pay separately. The grogue tasting at the distillery in Vale de Paúl is also optional and not included in the tour price.
How long is the full day, and what time does it start?
The tour runs 6 to 7 hours total. It starts with pickup at your accommodation, so the exact start time depends on where you're staying in Santo Antão.
Can I do this tour if I have a spinal injury?
The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries because of the mountainous terrain and the length of the day. If you have concerns about your mobility, contact the operator before booking.
