Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Santiago Island like locals
- Pick up from accommodation in Praia
- Drive along Praia city with guide
- Taste traditional breakfast at São Lourenço dos Orgãos
- Visit Assomada market
- Photo stop at Serra Malagueta Natural Park
- Relax at Tarrafal beach
- Drive back and drop off at accommodation
The experience
The day begins with pickup from your Praia accommodation and a drive through the city with your guide, who explains the neighborhoods and landmarks as you pass. Your first real stop is São Lourenço dos Orgãos, where you sit down to a traditional Cape Verdean breakfast (the kind families have eaten here for generations), and get a direct look at how mornings actually work in this place.
From there you head to Assomada to walk through the island's most famous market, where the stalls overflow with local fruits and vegetables in colors that shift with the season. The market only opens Wednesdays and Saturdays, so the day is timed around when it's actually alive. After that, the route takes you through Serra Malagueta Natural Park with a photo stop, then down to Tarrafal, where you have time to rest on the white sand beach and cool off in water clear enough to see through. The drive back to Praia closes the loop, with drop-off at your accommodation.
The tour runs eight hours total and includes the guide, all transport between stops, and a workshop on two traditional dishes (cuscuz and fidjos), so you leave with both the experience and the knowledge of how to make them. Your guide is a live person who speaks your language and knows the island well enough to answer questions that come up along the way.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 11 years); Infant (under 3): free.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the Assomada market actually like when you get there?
Assomada market is Cape Verde's most famous, filled with vendors selling fresh local produce (fruits, vegetables and other goods) in a busy, colorful setting. It operates only on Wednesdays and Saturdays, so the tour is scheduled to hit it when the market is in full swing and you can see how locals shop and trade.
Do I need to arrange my own way to the tour, or does pickup come to my hotel?
Hotel pickup and drop-off from your Praia accommodation are included in the tour, so you don't arrange separate transport to or from the meeting point.
What happens at the traditional breakfast stop?
You eat breakfast with a local Cape Verdean family at São Lourenço dos Orgãos, tasting dishes that have been part of family mornings here since ancient times. It's a direct way to see how people actually start their day on the island.
Is Tarrafal Beach included, or is that a separate stop I pay for?
Tarrafal Beach is part of the tour itinerary. You have time to relax on the white sand and swim in the clear water before the drive back to Praia.
