Drive white sand dunes, explore sea caves and reach an 11-kilometer beach in one morning

A half-day 4x4 tour from your hotel covers three landscapes: Viana desert dunes, caves carved by volcanic rock on the west coast, and Santa Monica Beach, Cape Verde's largest beach with 11.5 kilometers of white sand. The trip includes hotel transfer and one cocktail. A live guide speaks English, Portuguese or French.

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore dunes, caves, and beach

  • Visit Viana desert
  • Explore caves on west side
  • Visit Povoação Velha village
  • Relax at Santa Monica beach

The experience

The truck picks you up from your hotel and heads into Viana, the largest desert in Cape Verde. The dunes roll high enough that you'll spend time on foot, climbing and exploring the sand itself, not watching it pass. The scale of the place is what makes it work: the expanse is real, and the freedom to move through it is the point.

From there the route turns west to the sea caves. These are volcanic formations facing the ocean, and the operator frames them as a place where imagination takes over: the kind of site where you can stand inside and picture what came before. After the caves, you drive to Povoação Velha, the oldest village on the island, settled around 1620 by fishermen. It's a working place, not a museum stop, and the tour acknowledges that young people have left for Sal Rei, the larger city, so what you see is the village as it exists now.

Santa Monica Beach is the final stop and the reason the morning stretches to four hours. At 11.5 kilometers, it's the longest beach on the island, and the sand is white enough that it reads as the main event. The water is there to swim in if you want it. The truck brings you back to your hotel with time left in the day.

Is this one for you? This tour works best for small groups or families who want to move through three different landscapes in one morning without a full-day commitment. The 4x4 vehicle and the mix of dunes, caves and beach mean you're doing something different at each stop rather than sitting through a long drive to one main site.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, French and Portuguese.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 15 years); Infant (under 3): free.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is Viana desert like, and how much time do you spend there?

Viana is the largest desert in Cape Verde, and you'll explore it on foot, climbing and jumping through the dunes rather than viewing them from the truck. The operator builds the morning around the freedom of moving through the sand itself.

Can you swim at Santa Monica Beach, or is it just a stop to look?

Santa Monica Beach is 11.5 kilometers of white sand with water you can enter. The tour includes time there, so swimming is possible if you bring a suit and want to use the time that way.

What are the caves like, and what will I actually see inside them?

The caves are volcanic formations on the west side of Boavista facing the sea. They're open to explore on foot. The operator describes them as a place where you can imagine the history (pirates, treasures, the energy of the rock itself) rather than as a site with artifacts or guided interpretation inside.

How long is the full trip, and when does it end?

The tour runs four hours from pickup at your hotel to drop-off, covering the desert, caves, village and beach in that span.
