The experience
You start at Stanxa, a traditional Cape Verdean village where you can walk through local life and browse souvenir shops before climbing onto your quad. The real ride begins when you leave the main roads behind and head toward Santa Monica beach, a twelve-kilometer stretch of white sand where you'll have forty minutes to swim in the water or rest before the next leg. A guide leads the way and handles the route. If you're riding double, your partner sits behind you or takes the controls depending on what you've chosen at checkout.
From the beach, the quad trail runs west along the coast to Varandinha, where sea caves cut into the rock: local legend says pirates stashed treasure here centuries ago. You'll have time to explore the caves and the beach before the final push to Morro de Areia, the sand dunes that make this activity worth the ride. Climbing and descending the massive dunes on a quad is the adrenaline peak of the day. At the top, you stop to take in Chaves bay and let the rush settle before heading back.
The whole outing runs four hours from pickup to drop-off at your accommodation. You'll need a valid driver's license if you're the one operating the quad, and the activity isn't suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or serious heart conditions. Passengers must be at least seven years old. Helmets are provided. Bring water and sun protection because the dunes and beaches offer little shade.
