The Experience

I didn’t expect the salt lake at Pedra de Lume to feel so weird—almost like my body forgot how to sink. We’d started the day in Santa Maria, our guide Nuno already joking with us about sunscreen and “island time.” The drive across Sal was dusty but bright, with that dry wind that makes your lips crack if you’re not careful. When we reached Murdeira, the bay shimmered blue-green and I could see Monte Leão off in the distance—Nuno pointed it out with a little pride. He seemed to know everyone; people waved as we passed through Espargos, which made me feel like we weren’t just tourists passing by.

Lunch was at this spot called The Spot (yeah, really), and I went for the catchupa—kind of a slow-cooked stew. It tasted earthy and a bit sweet, almost smoky? My friend tried pizza instead because she panicked at the menu. There was laughter from another table where some locals were arguing over football scores. Afterward, we drove toward Palmeira’s port—the only one on Sal—and I caught this sharp smell of fish mixed with diesel from the boats. Not exactly pleasant but somehow fitting for a fishing village.

The real highlight for me was wading out into Parda Bay to see lemon sharks. You have to wear proper shoes because the rocks are brutal (I learned that fast). The water was cool on my ankles and then suddenly these shadows glided past—sleek, yellowish shapes just meters away. One kid in our group squealed when a shark turned closer; honestly, my heart jumped too. There’s something about seeing those animals up close that sticks with you longer than any photo.

On the way back, Nuno showed us schools and kindergartens around Espargos—it felt honest, seeing where people actually live instead of just postcard stuff. By then my hair was stiff with salt and sunblock but I didn’t care much; there was this tired happiness in our van as we bumped along the road home. I still think about floating in that crater lake—how quiet it got for a second before someone splashed me by accident.
