Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Sal Island highlights

  • Visit Espargos and see street art
  • Enjoy views from observatory point
  • Visit Buracona lagoon and see blue eye
  • Relax in Palmeira fishing village café
  • Float in Pedra de Lume salt lagoon
  • Discover Viveiros Botanical Garden and petting zoo

The experience

The day starts in Espargos, Sal's colourful capital, where you'll walk past street art and climb to an observatory point for elevated views over the town. From there the route moves to Buracona lagoon, where an optical illusion called the "blue eye" forms where sunlight hits the water. The pace stays unhurried through Palmeira, a laidback fishing village where you sit in a café while your guide shares the place's history.

The centerpiece is Pedra de Lume, a hypersaline lagoon built inside a volcanic crater that you reach through a tunnel. The salt concentration is so high you float on the surface without effort: the same physics that make the Dead Sea famous. Your guide will explain that the salt pans shift between seasons: sometimes you can pick up compressed salt crystals the size of a golf ball. Other times the salt hardens into a walkable surface. After floating, you'll stop at Viveiros Botanical Garden to see exotic vegetation and visit a small petting zoo before heading to lunch.

Lunch happens at a family-run restaurant serving traditional Cape Verdean food. You pick your menu at checkout: lobster or a standard option with meat, fish, or vegetarian dishes. Transport and the guide are included throughout. The full day runs eight hours from pickup to drop-off.
