The experience
Pedra de Lume Salt Lake sits inside the crater of an extinct volcano and is the world's only salt lagoon positioned this way. The mineral-rich water is so saline that you float effortlessly, and the experience is known locally as a natural spa. The high salt content leaves skin soft and refreshed. Your guide will explain how salt production shaped Sal Island's history and point out the historic cableway that once transported salt from the crater down to the coast, a remnant of the island's industrial past now visible against the volcanic landscape.
Before heading to the salt lake, you'll stop at Shark Bay to safely observe juvenile lemon sharks in their natural habitat. Water shoes are recommended for this part of the activity. You can bring your own or rent a pair on site for €2. The sequence lets you experience wildlife first, then move into the relaxation of floating in the warm, saline water. Hotel pickup and drop-off bookend the three-hour outing, and your guide will take complimentary photos and videos throughout.
Liability insurance is included, and child seats are available free of charge if you're traveling with young children. One small personal item is permitted. Large luggage cannot come along. Travelers under the influence of alcohol are not permitted to participate. The activity is suitable for most travelers, though Shark Bay is not recommended for those with reduced mobility.
