Drive rugged trails to salt lakes, vivid street art, and quiet bays beyond the coast

A four-hour 4WD tour of Sal Island that moves from coastal bays through inland desert to the salt lagoon of Pedra de Lume, where you float in one of the world's saltiest waters inside an extinct volcano crater. The tour uses closed off-roaders (the only operator on the island running them), and includes a guide, all admission fees and transport. Not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or reduced mobility. Children from age four are welcome.

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Sal Island's inland and coast

  • Visit Murdeira Bay
  • Explore Palmeira village and murals
  • See Buracona lagoon shimmer
  • View ocean-like sands at Terra Boa
  • Enjoy panorama of Espargos
  • Relax in Pedra de Lume salt lagoon

The experience

The tour starts at Murdeira Bay and heads inland in a covered 4x4, moving west to Palmeira, a fishing village where mural-painted cafés and cluttered souvenir shops line palm-tree streets. From there you reach Buracona lagoon, which shimmers when sunlight hits it at the right angle. The stops are chosen to show both the island's natural oddities and the everyday life of its residents, not just the postcard views.

Terra Boa comes next: a stretch of sand so flat and pale it creates a mirage, an optical illusion where hot air bends light and makes the sky look like a distant lake. A viewpoint stop gives you an elevated look at Espargos, the island's capital, before the tour winds down at Pedra de Lume. This is the payoff: a natural spa where you float effortlessly in a lagoon so salty your body stays buoyant without effort, all of it cradled inside the crater of an extinct volcano. Bring bathing gear and sunblock. The sun reflects hard off the salt water.

The closed 4x4s are what set this apart from other island tours. They keep you sheltered from the wind and sun during the drive, which matters on a four-hour off-road route across exposed terrain. Your guide is a live English speaker who knows the island and its culture. The original description includes a quote from Rodrigo, one of the guides, about the street art and daily life that most visitors miss. Note that the shimmer at Buracona and the mirage at Terra Boa depend on the sun's position that day, so neither is guaranteed.

Is this one for you?Small groups work well here because the closed 4x4s keep everyone together and sheltered during the drive, and the stops (fishing villages, desert mirages, a volcanic crater) are the kind that reward a guide's local knowledge. If you want to see inland Sal beyond the beach resorts and don't mind a bumpy ride to get there, this tour delivers the contrast in a single morning.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 11 years). Children under 4 can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is Pedra de Lume and why does floating there feel so different?

Pedra de Lume is a lagoon inside an extinct volcanic crater on Sal Island, filled with water so salty, comparable to the Dead Sea, that your body floats without any effort or swimming. The high salt content makes buoyancy automatic, and the crater walls frame the experience in a way that makes it feel removed from the rest of the island.

How rough is the 4WD drive, and will I be uncomfortable for four hours?

The tour is off-road and crosses inland desert terrain, so the ride is bumpy. The closed 4x4 vehicles used on this tour shelter you from wind and sun during the drive, which makes the experience more comfortable than open-air alternatives. The tour lasts four hours total, including stops at five different sites, so you're not driving the entire time.

Can I see the blue shimmer at Buracona and the mirage at Terra Boa?

Both Buracona's shimmer and Terra Boa's mirage are optical illusions created by sunlight hitting the landscape at specific angles, so neither can be guaranteed on the day you visit. The tour includes both stops regardless, but the visual effect depends on weather and the sun's position.

What's included in the price, and do I need to bring anything?

Transport in the 4WD, all admission fees to the sites, and a live English-speaking guide are included. Bring bathing gear and sunblock: the sun reflects intensely off the salt water at Pedra de Lume, and you'll want to swim in the lagoon.
