The Experience

Most shark encounters keep you behind glass or on a boat. This one puts you in the water where the sharks already are. You start at your hotel in Santa Maria, get picked up, and drive to Shark Bay on Sal Island's east coast — about 40 minutes in the water with juvenile lemon sharks swimming naturally around you in their protected nursery. The water stays knee-deep the whole time, which sounds small until you realize that's exactly what makes it safe and what makes the sharks comfortable enough to stay close.

Your guide is a native certified nature guide, not someone who learned about sharks from a manual. They walk in with you and spend the time explaining what you're actually seeing — the behavior, the life cycle, why these animals matter to Cape Verde's marine ecosystem. The sharks you'll encounter are typically between 50 centimeters and a meter long, young enough that they're curious but not aggressive. If larger adults show up, the shallow water keeps them at a distance. You get around 40 minutes to observe, ask questions, and take photos without feeling rushed or crowded; groups stay small so there's room to move and breathe.

Water shoes are included free, which matters more than it sounds when you're walking on rocky surfaces in shallow water. You bring your own swimwear, towel, sunscreen and sunglasses — and if you have a waterproof camera or GoPro, bring that too. The whole thing wraps up with a return to your accommodation, so you're not arranging transport or timing anything yourself. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, as is liability insurance.
