The Experience

"Ever sailed before?" the captain asks as you step aboard the Wandering Eye, a 44-foot Beneteau moored at Mosquito Creek. Most people haven't, and that's exactly the point. At 11 a.m., you motor out of Vancouver Harbour into Burrard Inlet, and the city starts to look different—smaller, somehow, when you're seeing it from the water instead of from the seawall. Coal Harbour slides past on one side, Stanley Park's rainforest on the other, and then the Lions Gate Bridge opens up ahead.

Once you're past the bridge and into open water, the sails go up. The captain—who's been sailing these waters for over 45 years and spent 12 years volunteering with the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue—knows the route like he knows his own boat. You'll see Bowen Island, Point Atkinson, West Vancouver, and if the light is right, across to the Georgia Strait. English Bay spreads out wide and quiet. If you want to just sit and watch, there's beer, ciders, and snacks waiting. If you want to learn, he'll put you to work: trim the sails, take the helm, feel what it takes to actually sail instead of just ride along. Water and pop for anyone who's not drinking.

At 2 p.m., the sails come down and you motor back to Mosquito Creek. The whole thing takes three hours, and you've covered more of Vancouver than most people see in a week on land. The captain also offers overnight trips, private charters, or custom dates if the regular schedule doesn't fit—just ask when you book.
