The experience
The Zodiac accelerates to 55 km/h as soon as you clear the Vancouver Outer Harbour, and the city starts shrinking behind you. Your guide (someone who actually knows these waters) points out the Lions Gate Bridge first, then swings the boat toward English Bay where the North Shore mountains rise up so steep they look almost unreal. You're dressed in a provided cruiser suit (required by Transport Canada, and yeah, it's not glamorous, but it works), and the water's already colder than you expected. Ninety minutes sounds short until you're actually out here, and then it feels like the right amount of time to see everything without getting numb.
The route takes you past West Vancouver's forested shores and into False Creek, but the real moment comes at Seal Rocks. The boat slows down and your guide cuts the engine, and suddenly you're watching a whole colony of harbour seals hauled out on the rocks: some sleeping, some sliding back into the water, one or two watching you watch them.
