Step-by-step itinerary

Kayak tour around Newcastle Island

  • Receive kayak and equipment
  • Paddle around Saysutshun/Newcastle Island
  • Observe rock formations and trees
  • Spot wildlife like eagles and seals
  • Take a break on a beach
  • Explore tidal zone biodiversity

The Experience

You arrive at the launch and get fitted with a kayak—either a single or a tandem if you want to paddle with someone else, or a tandem with a center seat if you're bringing a small child. The guide walks you through the basics, then you push off into the Salish Sea and paddle around Newcastle Island and Saysutshun. The route follows the coastline, passing Arbutus and Garry Oak trees, rock formations and shallow areas where sea stars, crabs and anemones live on the seafloor beneath you.

Wildlife is the draw here. Bald eagles perch in the trees along the shore, and seals surface near the kayaks. The guide knows where to look and what to point out, so you're not just paddling—you're learning what you're seeing. The pace is manageable for beginners; this is not a fitness test, and the guide adjusts for the group's speed and comfort.

Partway through, you beach the kayaks and spend time in the tidal zone, turning over rocks and exploring what lives there. The four hours includes paddling time, the beach break and the return to the launch. Bring a camera—the rock formations and wildlife make for good shots, and the angle from the water is different from anything you'd see from shore.
