The Experience

The route heads east toward the Blinkhorn Peninsula, moving between shallow underwater habitats and deeper water where different wildlife congregates. Your guide interprets what you're seeing—the intertidal creatures clinging to rocks, the bald eagles fishing from the shore, the seals hauled out on rocks, the porpoises moving through the strait. The emphasis stays on wildlife encounters and what the guide can read in the water and the coastline, not on covering distance.

Orcas do pass through Johnstone Strait, and the guide will keep you in areas they frequent when conditions allow, but sightings are not guaranteed. What is reliable is the smaller wildlife—the seals, eagles, porpoises and otters—and the landscape itself: remote beaches, rocky outcrops, and the dynamic water of the strait. The five-hour window gives the guide time to move with what's happening rather than rush through a fixed itinerary.

You get a kayak, paddle, and dry bag to stow gear. The trip is designed to be approachable for people new to sea kayaking, and your guide handles the technical side so you can focus on paddling and watching. Morning and afternoon departures are both available; choose based on when you have a free block of five hours and what light you prefer for photography.
