The experience
The tour departs from your chosen pickup point (Calgary, Canmore or Banff), and heads into the park along the Icefields Parkway. Lake Louise comes first, a glacial lake ringed by peaks where the Fairmont Chateau sits on the shore. From June through October, the route includes Moraine Lake, a turquoise glacial lake surrounded by ten peaks. In winter, Johnston Canyon replaces it. You stop for a one-hour lunch break partway through the day.
Peyto Lake, visible from Bow Summit, has a distinctive wolf-head shape formed by glacier rock flour suspended in its water. Bow Lake sits lower on the parkway, a clear turquoise glacial lake backed by mountains and accessible for photos and short walks. Crowfoot Glacier, named for its three-lobed shape, overlooks Bow Lake from across the valley. The tour also passes Cascade Mountain and Castle Mountain, landmarks within the park's Bow Valley and midway between Banff and Lake Louise.
The vehicle is air-conditioned and seats you with other travelers on this shared group tour. The guide speaks English, Chinese or Cantonese depending on the departure. Total time is eight to ten hours including all travel between stops. Road conditions and weather can shift the itinerary, and you'll receive a reminder the day before with any updates to pickup times or route changes.
Is this one for you?Book from Calgary or Canmore if you don't have a car in the park. From Banff if you're already staying there and want to skip the drive. The shared group format means you travel with other visitors, which keeps the price lower than a private tour. Contact the operator if you'd prefer to book privately instead.

What is Peyto Lake and why does it have that wolf-head shape?
Peyto Lake is a glacial lake in Banff known for its vibrant turquoise color, caused by glacier rock flour suspended in the water. Viewed from Bow Summit along the Icefields Parkway, the lake's outline resembles a wolf's head, a distinctive silhouette that makes it recognizable from the scenic overlook.
Does the tour visit different lakes in winter than in summer?
Yes. From June through October, the summer itinerary includes Moraine Lake. From October through May, when Moraine Lake is closed, the winter route replaces it with Johnston Canyon, so you see five lakes and the canyon instead.
Where can I be picked up for this tour?
Pickup is available in Calgary, Canmore or Banff. All pickup times and locations are fixed, so you choose the one that suits you best when you book. If you have special requests, contact the operator directly.
How much time do we spend at each lake?
The tour includes stops at Lake Louise, Moraine Lake (summer) or Johnston Canyon (winter), Peyto Lake, Bow Lake and Crowfoot Glacier, with time for photos and short walks at scenic overlooks. A one-hour lunch break is built into the eight to ten hour total, which includes all travel time between sites.
What wildlife might I see along the Icefields Parkway?
The area around Peyto Lake and the surrounding trails is home to bears, elk and mountain goats. Wildlife spotting is possible at the lake stops and scenic viewpoints, though sightings are not guaranteed.
