Clearwater whitewater rafting: rapids class 1–4
You operate the raft through named rapids—The Wall, Buckaroo, Pink Mountain—not watch from a boat.
A 3.5-hour whitewater rafting trip on the Clearwater River near Clearwater, where you paddle through rapids class 1 through 4 and see Wells Gray Park's volcanic canyons from the water. A professional guide leads the trip, provides all equipment and safety instruction, and operates two daily departures so you can combine rafting with other park exploration. Children from age 5 are welcome when accompanied by an adult.
Step-by-step itinerary
Whitewater rafting adventure
- Raft down Clearwater River rapids
The Experience
You arrive 30 minutes before departure, get fitted with a wetsuit and water shoes (or bring your own lace-up pair), and receive a detailed safety briefing on the water. The guide walks you through paddle technique and positioning in the raft before you push off down the Clearwater River. The rapids come named—The Wall, Buckaroo, Pink Mountain—and range from class 1 to class 4, so the difficulty builds as the trip unfolds rather than hitting you all at once.
The river cuts through Wells Gray Park's volcanic canyons, and from your seat in the raft you see the geology and the water at the same scale. The 3.5-hour trip is long enough to move through multiple sections of river and feel the rhythm of paddling, but short enough that two daily departures (morning and afternoon) let you split the day—raft in the morning and explore the park on foot, or reverse it. The guide handles navigation and safety calls; your job is to paddle when instructed and brace when the current gets steep.
The trip runs in all weather, and you'll need at least a moderate level of physical fitness to paddle for that duration. Bring a swimsuit or shorts to wear under the wetsuit. The operator can loan water shoes if you don't have them, but lace-up or secure footwear is essential—sandals and slip-ons won't work on the raft.
What’s included
- A professional guide leading the entire trip.
- all necessary equipment including wetsuit, life jacket, paddle and helmet.
- water shoes (bring your own lace-up pair or borrow ours).
- a detailed safety briefing before you push off.
- and on-river training so you know how to paddle and brace before the rapids start.
Operated by Liquid Lifestyles Whitewater Rafting and Kayaking
Is this one for you?The 3.5-hour duration leaves room for a second activity in Wells Gray Park the same day—a morning raft and afternoon hike, or vice versa—which is why the operator runs two departures. If you want a full-day immersion in one activity, this is a half-day commitment; if you want to split your time between the river and the park, the timing is built for that.
