The experience

The tour starts with a lunch stop in Huntsville's cottage country before arriving at Algonquin Provincial Park, where a guide walks you through tent setup and you spend your first evening on the beach and around a campfire learning to make s'mores. Day two opens with a continental breakfast and a 45-minute hike to Beaver Pond Trail, a 2.0 km loop that crosses a real beaver pond and reaches a lookout over the woodland. After that comes the centerpiece: paddling Canoe Lake in a shared canoe, the same water captured in Tom Thomson's famous paintings. Dinner is camp-cooked and served late, around 8pm, so you eat as the sun sets.

Day three moves you to Killbear and then Killarney Provincial Park, with a grocery stop and a hot lunch at Trestle Brewing Company along the river. You set up at George Lake and spend the afternoon on the beach before supper. The final day is a challenging hike up a mountain in Killarney for wildlife spotting and views of the entire skyline. The guide may substitute a similar hike depending on conditions. Throughout the trip, you share cooking and dishwashing duties at least once, and all meals except restaurant stops are vegetarian. Tent, sleeping bag and sleeping pad come with you. Solo guests are paired with one other person in a 4-person tent unless you book the Solo Tent add-on.

Transportation is air-conditioned and included, as are park entry fees, camping fees and stargazing on clear nights. The guide speaks English and Ukrainian. Children are welcome from age 5, and the operator notes that first-timers will learn the basics of camping as you go.
