The experience
Oudong was Cambodia's royal capital from 1618 to 1866, and the mountain itself holds three hills dotted with stupas and temples. The largest stupas contain the remains of King Monivong and King Ang Duong, and the walk up over 500 steps rewards you with countryside views across the plains. The hills also carry weight as a site of Khmer Rouge resistance in 1979. A memorial stands there now to those who died. Your guide provides context on Cambodia's royal history and the events that shaped the landscape you're walking through.
The day moves between several stops: Phnom Preah Reach Troap, a sacred mountain with ancient settlement relics; the Royal Tombs themselves; and the Preah Sakyamoni Chedi, one of the most intact chedi structures in Udong. You'll also visit Phnom Baset to see an 8th-century pre-Angkorian temple and a reclining Buddha, with views across rice fields and surrounding plains. Wat Sowann Thamareach, rarely visited by tourists, offers a chance to see a newer Buddhist temple complex with architecture that breaks from the traditional yellow-roofed wat design. The Sontte Wan Buddhist Meditation Center, Cambodia's largest Buddhist center, is open to the public for wandering the gardens.
Your private vehicle picks you up at your hotel and handles all transport between sites. The tour runs 7 to 9 hours depending on how long you spend at each stop. Entrance fees to all attractions are included. Lunch at local restaurants is optional and at your own expense, with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options available.
