The experience
The drive west from Phnom Penh takes you 120 kilometers along Highway 4 to Kirirom, a 35,000-hectare park established in 1945 and named "Joyful Mountain" by the King. Your guide picks you up at 7:30 am from your hotel and handles the route. The road roughens once you leave the highway, but the vehicle is air-conditioned and built for it. The first stop is Chambok community, one of Cambodia's earliest community-based tourism projects, where you trek 30 minutes through the forest to reach Chambok waterfall. The streams here are the draw: three of them flow through the area, and the biggest one feeds the waterfall you walk toward.
After Chambok, you pass through the park gate and drive all the way to the summit, where the views open across forest and mountain ranges. The elevation is 675 meters, high enough to feel like a different landscape from the lowlands you left. You walk one of the many trails toward the lake: a 20-minute stroll through pine forest that is the park's signature feature. Streams and rapids dot the park, and the trails are gentle enough for a moderate pace, though the terrain is uneven in places. Bring water and wear shoes with grip.
Lunch is your own arrangement before you leave Phnom Penh, so pack or buy something to eat during the day. The return drive starts mid-afternoon, getting you back to the city by evening. Seven hours total gives you a full immersion in the park without the rush of a half-day trip.

What is the Chambok waterfall trek actually like?
The trek to Chambok waterfall is 30 minutes through forest, following one of three streams in the Chambok area. The path is a guided walk, not a scramble, and the waterfall is fed by the largest stream in the community.
How high is Kirirom National Park and what will I see from the top?
The summit sits at 675 meters elevation. From there, you see views across the surrounding forest and mountain ranges. The pine forest is the park's defining feature, and it covers much of what you walk through on the trails.
How much walking is involved in this tour?
You do a 30-minute trek to the waterfall and a 20-minute stroll along the trails toward the lake. Both are at a moderate pace through forest terrain, so comfortable shoes with grip are important.
Do I need to arrange my own lunch?
Yes, lunch is your own arrangement. You should pack or buy food in Phnom Penh before pickup, since the park itself has no restaurants or shops.
What time does the tour end and how far is it back to Phnom Penh?
The return to Phnom Penh happens mid-afternoon after a full day in the park. The drive back is 120 kilometers along Highway 4, taking roughly two to three hours depending on traffic.
