The experience

The day starts at 9am with pickup from your hotel. Your guide takes you through Battambang's French colonial architecture and the local market, then to Wat Samrong Knong, a 300-year-old Buddhist temple that served as a prison during the Pol Pot regime. The guide explains the history here and at the Well of Shadows, a killing field where over 10,000 people were killed. After that, you spend a few hours in small villages and countryside watching families make bamboo sticky rice, rice paper for spring rolls, and dried banana. You can taste samples along the way. A short walk through the fish paste market (called Cambodian cheese locally) rounds out this section.

Next is Ek Phnom temple, one of Battambang's oldest ruins, built in the early 11th century with a large Buddha statue nearby. Then comes the bamboo train: you ride the original bamboo platform train through small villages and countryside. The government plans to close this train soon, so this may be your last chance to experience it. The bamboo train ticket is 5 dollars per person and not included in the tour price. After the ride, you head to Phnom Sampov mountain, where you can walk up or take a motorbike or pickup truck to the summit. The mountain holds a killing cave where over 10,000 people were executed during the Pol Pot regime. You'll see real skulls and bones inside a stupa in the cave. From the top, there's a view of the countryside and a Buddhist pagoda. Monkeys live on the mountain. They're generally fine to observe but some are aggressive, so keep your distance.

The final stop is the Bat Cave, where millions of bats emerge at dusk in a stream that lasts 30 to 40 minutes. After watching them fly out, your guide returns you to your hotel. The tour runs 6 to 7 hours total and includes private tuk-tuk transportation, a local guide, entrance fees to the killing cave and bat cave, and bottled water. Lunch is not included.
