The Experience

Your guide picks you up at your Sofia hotel and drives you to Vitosha Mountain, where the hiking begins. The mountain holds the distinction of being Bulgaria's first national park and sits on the Balkan Peninsula; the Vitosha nature park within it spreads across multiple hiking routes suited to different levels. On the way up, you'll see Sofia shrink below you, and the guide stops for a traditional Bulgarian breakfast before the main hike. The stone formations known as Golden Bridges are part of the route, and you'll reach Boyana Lake and Boyana Waterfall during the day.

After the hiking portion, you head back down to Sofia for the heritage stops. Boyana Church, a medieval Orthodox building on the city's outskirts, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979; the guide walks you through its history and significance. The final stop is the National History Museum, Bulgaria's largest, which holds over 650,000 objects spanning archaeology, fine arts, history and ethnography—though only about 10% are on permanent display. The museum moved to its current location in 2000, a former residence in the Boyana district.

The car is yours alone for the day, with a professional driver who also serves as your guide and speaks English. Most trips use eco-friendly vehicles with CNG engines or electric motors. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, so you don't arrange transport to the mountain or back to your accommodation.
