The Experience
The day starts at Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia, an iconic Orthodox church with Neo-Byzantine architecture and an underground museum. From there, the SUV takes you south to Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second-largest city and one of Europe's oldest — its history reaches back 4,000 years. Your guide leads a two-hour walking tour through the Old Town, where you'll see the Roman theatre from the 1st century AD (still one of the world's best-preserved), the Plovdiv City Hall with its 100-year-old magnolia trees, and the Dzhumaya Mosque, built after the Ottoman conquest in the 14th century. The walk also passes Milyo the Crazy, a local sculpture and symbol of the city's spirit.
Plovdiv's Old Town is a maze of cobblestone streets, restored buildings, art galleries and cafes — the Kapana district alone has become Bulgaria's first dedicated creative quarter. You'll move through the Ethnographic Museum quarter and see the Stadium of Philippopolis, a Roman arena from the 2nd century AD that once hosted events when Philippopolis was the capital of the Roman province of Thracia. The walking tour gives you time to absorb the layers: Roman, Ottoman, Bulgarian, all visible in the same blocks.
After Plovdiv, the SUV heads to Boyana Church, a medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church on Sofia's outskirts that made UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1979. The frescoes and architecture inside date back roughly 900 years. The tour includes entry to all three sites and WiFi on board the vehicle. Lunch is not included, though the itinerary passes restaurants where you can eat on your own.
