The experience
The trek follows a loop that enters and exits through the same access route, so you're not backtracking. Day one covers roughly three hours of hiking to Mirante da Rampa, where the valley opens below you: the first real view of what you've come to see. You sleep in one of the 14 family-run houses scattered through the valley, simple and warm, and the operator asks for notice if you need a private room. Day two is the hardest: you leave at 8 a.m. and climb Morro do Castelo, a peak that rises 250 meters in 60 to 80 minutes of steep terrain. At the top sit two viewpoints and the entrance to Gruta da Lapinha, one of the world's rarest caves, sitting at over 1,000 meters of altitude. The descent follows the same path, and if time allows, you visit a waterfall near the house before dark.
The final day is a three-hour descent to Mirante do Cachoeirão (two hours over broken ground, then one hour on flatter terrain), where the viewpoint stands 280 meters above the valley floor. If you're hiking during the rainy season, roughly 16 waterfalls pour down the rock faces around you. After a packed lunch prepared by your guide, you walk through Gerais do Rio Preto and down the Aleixos trail to meet the van around 5 p.m., then drive 80 kilometers back to Lençóis. The whole trek demands good physical fitness and the willingness to hike for days over slippery, rugged ground in sun and rain. A guide in English or Portuguese leads the way and handles logistics.

Is this one for you? This trek suits hikers with at least moderate fitness who are ready for steep climbs, slippery terrain, and multi-day exposure to sun and rain. The 3-day length fits the full loop (shorter treks miss the Morro do Castelo summit, and longer ones repeat ground), so if you want all three major viewpoints and the rare high-altitude cave, this is the span that reaches them.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Portuguese.
What is Morro do Castelo and why does it take the most effort?
Morro do Castelo is a mountain peak on day two that rises 250 meters above the surrounding terrain and sits at over 1,200 meters of altitude. The climb takes 60 to 80 minutes of steep hiking and is the most strenuous section of the three days. The descent retraces the same route. At the summit you reach two separate viewpoints and the entrance to Gruta da Lapinha, a rare cave formation.
Can I sleep in a private room, or do I share accommodations?
The houses are family-run and simple, and you can request a private room if you let the operator know in advance. Otherwise, arrangements depend on availability at the time of booking.
What happens if heavy rain falls during the trek?
The terrain becomes slippery and rugged in rain, which is why the operator requires good physical fitness and the ability to hike under adverse weather. The itinerary continues as planned. Rain is part of the experience, especially during the rainy season when waterfalls are most dramatic.
How far is the drive from Lençóis to the start of the trek?
The transfer covers roughly 80 kilometers from Lençóis to the trailhead at Aleixos, and the same distance back on the final day. The operator includes both transfers in the price.
What makes Vale do Pati different from other treks in the region?
Vale do Pati sits at approximately 1,000 meters above sea level and transitions between Atlantic Forest remnants, high-altitude savanna (Campos Rupestres), and grassland (Campos Gerais). The 14 preserved houses that once housed farmers now serve as accommodations, so you're sleeping inside the valley rather than camping, and the loop route means you see the landscape from multiple angles: Mirante da Rampa on day one, Morro do Castelo on day two, and Mirante do Cachoeirão on day three.
