The experience

You leave your Curitiba hotel around 7:00am by bus and head to the train station to board the historic Paranaguá-Curitiba Railway. This line, inaugurated by Princess Isabel in 1884, runs through the Serra do Mar ecological reserve and is one of Brazil's most engineered routes: the track crosses 41 bridges, passes through 13 tunnels, and includes the iconic São João Bridge and Carvalho Viaduct. The train winds through mountains and valleys adorned with rivers and waterfalls, and onboard you get a snack and soft drink or bottled water included with your ticket.

When you arrive in Morretes, you walk through the charming colonial center with its historic houses, craft markets, and churches. Then comes lunch at the Nhundiaquara river banks: barreado, a traditional Paraná specialty of beef slowly cooked for 12 hours in a clay pot sealed with manioc flour paste. The meat falls apart on the plate, served over rice with sliced bananas, oranges, and manioc flour, plus a breaded fish on the side. After eating and exploring the town's shops and artisanal sweets, you visit Hisgeopar Theme Park, which displays the history and geography of Paraná in miniature: dozens of dolls staging the colonial period, models of the railroad route, and recreations of landmarks like the Itaipu dam and Iguazu Falls.

At the end of the day, you return to Curitiba by van along the Estrada da Graciosa, one of Brazil's most scenic roads. If weather turns bad, the route switches to BR-277 for safety. You arrive back in Curitiba around 4:30pm. Your guide speaks Portuguese, English, or Spanish (you choose your language when you book), and is bilingual during the train ride only.
