The experience

The tour starts at Santos Seaport, where you meet your bilingual guide and climb into a fully-equipped vehicle for the day. From there you drive through the restored historic center and along the 8-kilometer beach strip: the largest beach garden in the world at 5,335 meters, planted with flowers and trees. The guide shares the city's history as you move through it: the port that moves a huge portion of Brazil's GDP, the colonial settlements, the landmarks that shaped the place.

Your first stop is Porchat Island, where you climb to Niemeyer's monument at the hilltop and look out over the shoreline, the city of São Vicente across the water, ships on the horizon, and paragliders in the air. Next is the Zoobotanic Park, a walk through nearly 500 animals of 70 species living semi-free (agouti, tortoises, peacocks) plus a sensory garden and an indoor bird nursery where birds land close enough to touch. The park holds about 1,500 trees and shrubs, many of them tropical specimens from around the world. You'll have an hour for lunch at an all-you-can-eat buffet (not included in the tour price) before heading to Mount Serrat.

At Mount Serrat, you ride a cable car up the peak to a former casino that now serves as a panoramic viewpoint. From the top you see the port, the urban sprawl of Santos, the Bertioga Canal, and the islands beyond. At the summit stands a 17th-century chapel, the Chapel of Our Lady of Monte Serrat, built in 1603 and the patron saint shrine of the city. After Mount Serrat, the tour includes a quick visit to the Pelé Museum (a five-story building with his World Cup trophies, match footage, and a timeline of his life), and the Sanctuary of St. Anthony of Valongo, a 1640 church with rich, colorful decorations. The final stop is the Coffee Museum, an eclectic-style building from 1922 with marble and Bohemian crystal chandeliers, where you learn about coffee's role in Brazil's economy and can taste different roasts ground fresh at the café.
