The experience

The tour runs six hours and covers four major stops, each one a different layer of Santos. You start at the Pelé Museum, housed in a 19th-century building that survived two fires and was rebuilt. Inside are 2,354 items from the footballer's personal collection, including shirts, boots, trophies and a ball made of socks, plus an interactive space where you can test your own ball skills against his recorded performance. From there you board a historic tram (original vehicles from Scotland, Portugal and Italy) that runs 5 kilometers through the historic center in about 40 minutes, passing 40 points of cultural interest with a guide narrating the route. The motormen and drivers wear replicas of the original uniforms from when trams were the city's main transport.

The Coffee Museum sits in a 6,000-square-meter eclectic-style building with over 200 doors and windows, opened in 1998. It traces coffee from cultivation to its place as a Brazilian symbol, with permanent and temporary exhibitions, period furniture, and a café serving some of the country's rarest beans. After that, a cable car climbs 147 meters up Monte Serrat to the top, where a 402-step staircase with 14 niches depicting scenes from the Via Sacra leads to a shrine built over 400 years ago. The 360-degree view from the summit takes in the city, the waterfront gardens (the largest beachfront garden in the world), and parts of three neighboring municipalities. All entrance fees, the air-conditioned vehicle and the guide are included. You arrange your own meals and drinks.
