The experience

We were already weaving past Copacabana when I realized how much energy Rio wakes up with. Our guide, Ana, had this easy way of pointing things out (like the poet’s statue on the beach) without sounding rehearsed. The air was thick with sea salt and something sweet from a street vendor nearby. Ipanema flashed by, just as someone started humming “Garota de Ipanema” under their breath (not me, but I was tempted). It felt fast but not rushed: more like we were catching Rio mid-laugh.

The train up Corcovado was my favorite part. It’s not quiet (kids chatter, leaves brush the windows as you climb through Tijuca forest), but there’s this hush when Christ the Redeemer finally comes into view.
