The Experience

We were already weaving past Copacabana when I realized how much energy Rio wakes up with. Our guide, Ana, had this easy way of pointing things out—like the poet’s statue on the beach—without sounding rehearsed. The air was thick with sea salt and something sweet from a street vendor nearby. Ipanema flashed by, just as someone started humming “Garota de Ipanema” under their breath (not me, but I was tempted). It felt fast but not rushed—more like we were catching Rio mid-laugh.

The train up Corcovado was my favorite part. It’s not quiet—kids chatter, leaves brush the windows as you climb through Tijuca forest—but there’s this hush when Christ the Redeemer finally comes into view. I didn’t expect to feel so small standing there, honestly. Ana told us about how they built it piece by piece; she even showed us a photo of her grandfather working on one of the early restoration teams. The view is wild—city curling around hills and water—and it smelled faintly like rain even though the sky was clear.

Maracanã Stadium looked massive from outside; we stopped for photos at the Bellini statue, and an old man selling jerseys tried to guess our nationalities (he got mine wrong). We only passed by the Sambadrome but you could almost hear echoes from Carnival in those empty stands. The Metropolitan Cathedral surprised me—I mean, it looks like a concrete spaceship from outside, but inside it’s all colored light and cool stone floors. I tried sitting for a minute just to take it in.

The Selarón Steps were packed with people taking selfies and laughing at each other’s poses. Tiles from all over the world—I found one from Portugal tucked near the bottom. There was this smell of paint and coffee lingering together somehow. I still think about that mosaic of color whenever someone mentions Rio now.
