The Experience

We were already winding through the green tangle of Tijuca when I realized how loud the city had been until that moment. The van windows were cracked just enough for that earthy, damp smell to sneak in—like wet leaves after a short rain. Our guide, Ana, pointed out a toucan (I only half-saw it), then started telling us how Cariocas escape up here on hot days. It felt like we’d slipped into another world, but then suddenly you see the Christ Redeemer statue—so much bigger than I expected—arms open wide above everything. I don’t know if it’s the height or just all those people quietly looking up at once, but it’s weirdly moving.

Ana herded us back down and into Santa Teresa next. The streets got narrower and steeper; someone’s samba was drifting from an open window. We stopped for coffee at a place with chipped tiles and old fans spinning lazily overhead. I tried to order in Portuguese—Ana grinned at my accent—and we talked about how this neighborhood used to be full of artists and poets. There’s something about Santa Teresa that makes you want to slow down, even though this is supposed to be a “day trip Rio highlights” kind of tour.

The Selarón Steps are… well, they’re loud in their own way. Colors everywhere, people taking photos on every other step. I found a tile from Chile wedged between two blue ones—Selarón was obsessed with red but let other colors sneak in too. Ten minutes isn’t long here but honestly, it’s enough before you get swept along again toward Sugarloaf Mountain.

The cable car up Sugarloaf is quick but my palms still got sweaty (heights aren’t really my thing). At the top there’s this salty wind off Guanabara Bay and the city looks like it’s spilling out around the water. We watched little boats crawling across the bay while Ana pointed out where she grew up—somewhere behind Copacabana beach. I still think about that view sometimes when I hear seagulls back home. Anyway, after that we just drifted back down and into traffic again, tired but sort of happy in that way you get after seeing so much in one go.
