The experience
The hike to Pedra do Telégrafo takes roughly an hour one way up a mountainous trail through Pedra Branca State Park. The summit sits 354 meters above sea level and opens onto a view that pulls in the city on one side, wild beaches and Tijuca National Park on another, and the Marambaia (a vast marshland ecosystem of lagoons and dense vegetation) on the third. The rock itself has become known for the photographs people take there, but the vantage point is genuine: you're standing on a promontory that frames the whole west side of Rio.
After descending, the tour stops at Grumari Beach for an hour of swimming and rest. Grumari sits in Rio's west zone, ringed by mountains and known for clear water and soft sand. This is where the pace shifts from climbing to floating. The guide will photograph you during the day and transfer the images to your phone before you leave.
The drive back traces Rio's coast, passing São Conrado Beach, where paragliders land, and Barra da Tijuca, which stretches nearly 20 kilometers along the Atlantic. You'll have chances to stop and shoot photos along the way. The whole outing runs six hours. Hotel pickup is included, and you can choose from three departure times: sunrise, early morning or afternoon on weekdays. Groups of four or more get a discount.
Is this one for you?Choose the sunrise departure if you want to reach the summit before other hikers arrive and catch the light on the city and marshlands. The afternoon option works better if you're settling into Rio and want to end your day at the beach rather than start it on the trail.
