The Experience

The guide was supposed to meet us at 8am, but the van didn't pull up until 8:17, and honestly that's when I realized this wasn't going to be a tightly choreographed tour. It was going to be the kind of day where timing gets loose because there's too much to see. We picked up a few other travelers, maybe eight of us total, and headed out of Paraty toward the village of Trindade—40 minutes north along a road that gets narrower and greener the further you go. The guide, who'd worked in the area for years, started talking about the caiçara people, the fishing families who've lived here for generations, and suddenly the beaches we were about to see weren't just pretty—they had a story.

First stop was Praia do Cepilho, a surfer's spot with a quick photo break before we moved on. Then Praia dos Ranchos—or Praia de Fora, depending on who you ask—where the fishermen's bars sit right on the sand and rocks jut out like natural sculptures. This is where you can order lunch if you want it, and the guide said to remember this place because we'd be coming back here later. From there, a light 10-minute walk got us to Praia do Meio, where the real hike starts. The guide handed out masks and snorkels—included in the tour—and we set off into the Atlantic Forest on a 40-minute trail that winds through clearings and mountain forest. It's not steep, but it's real walking, roots and uneven ground, and by the time we reached Praia de Cacadaço and then the Caixa d'Aço natural pool, you've earned the swim.

The pool itself is a set of rocks forming a basin in the sea, and the water is so clear you can see fish moving below you. We had about an hour to snorkel, swim, dive if you wanted—the guide pointed out different species, but mostly people just floated and looked. You can walk back the same trail or pay US$7 per person for a boat ride back to Praia do Meio; most of us walked, which meant another 40 minutes through the forest, but by then you're moving slower, thinking about what you've seen. Back at Praia dos Ranchos, there's time to sit on the white sand, swim again if you want, or just lie there and let the day settle.

The whole thing takes about 7 hours from pickup to return. You're in a van with air conditioning, you've got a guide who knows the ecology and the culture, and you're not arranging transport, park entry, or timing yourself—the tour handles that. If you want to eat, the seafood restaurants at Praia dos Ranchos are there; if you want to skip it, you skip it. The only extra cost is the boat ride back from the natural pool, which is optional and paid directly to the operator in local currency.
