The Experience

We’d barely left the dock in Paraty when someone pointed out dolphins off to the left — not even kidding. The boat had that salty wood smell mixed with sunscreen and coffee (they actually had some brewing at the back). Our guide, Marcelo, kept switching between Portuguese and English without missing a beat. He handed me a snorkel mask and grinned like he knew I’d be awkward with it. He was right.

The water in Paraty Bay is warmer than I expected — kind of silky? When I put my face under, I could hear my own breathing and see these little yellow fish darting around. At one point I lost track of time just floating there. We hopped onto a fastboat to reach this tiny beach — sand so fine it squeaked underfoot. A couple of locals were playing cards under a tree; they waved us over but we just watched for a bit, half-shy.

Tropical fruit at the end tasted way sweeter than what you get in the city. Maybe it was just being salty and sunburned by then. Marcelo poured everyone coffee (optional but honestly perfect) before we headed back across the bay. Still think about that feeling of sun on wet skin as the boat picked up speed — you know when you’re tired but happy? That was it.
