Step-by-step itinerary

  • Visit Niterói Contemporary Art Museum

  • Pass by São Francisco Beach
  • Explore Parque da Cidade park
  • Lunch at Jurujuba Beach area
  • Visit Santa Cruz da Barra Fortress

The Experience

The Niterói Contemporary Art Museum sits on a rocky outcrop like a ship frozen mid-turn, its spiral ramp designed by Oscar Niemeyer in 1996 dropping you straight into views of Guanabara Bay and Rio's skyline. You walk through 1,217 works from the João Sattamini Collection—the second-largest contemporary art holding in Brazil—before stepping back outside to remember where you are. That same bay, that same entrance, is what the Fortress of Santa Cruz da Barra has been guarding since 1612, when it replaced an earlier fortification from 1555. The fortress sits at the tip of a rocky promontory and still stands, still watches.

A private vehicle picks you up and moves between these three stops: the museum, the fortress, and Parque da Cidade, which opens from a hilltop in the São Francisco neighborhood and lets you see Morro do Corcovado and the Christ statue as a small shape across the water. The park was built in 1976 and sits on Morro da Viração, an environmental preservation zone. You're not rushing—the pace is yours, and the driver knows the neighborhoods. Icaraí Beach comes into view too, the most famous beach in Niterói, with two rock formations (the Stone of Itapuca and the Pedra do Índio) that the city uses as symbols. The whole day stays in Niterói, across the bay from Rio, which means you get the architecture and the art and the history without the crowds that swallow Rio's center.

Museum entry is included, and the vehicle is air-conditioned. If you need to stop at Jurujuba Beach, about 12 kilometers from central Niterói, there are restaurants there that specialize in seafood. The tour works for families—strollers fit, infants can sit on laps, and the whole thing is wheelchair accessible. You're not on a schedule with other groups; it's just you and whoever you came with, moving through a city that most Rio visitors never cross the bay to see.
