The experience

Your guide meets you at your hotel and drives you through Manaus's historic center to four sites that tell the story of the city's golden age. The Amazon Theatre anchors the tour: a Belle Époque opera house completed in 1896 with Murano chandeliers, jacaranda wood floors and that iconic dome of 36,000 Brazilian-flag-colored ceramic tiles. Entry is included, and you walk through the interior with your guide. From there you move to the Rio Negro Palace, a 1903 mansion built by a German rubber baron that now houses government offices and a museum. The grand staircase and period rooms show the wealth that flowed through Manaus during the rubber trade. The Adolpho Lisboa Market, an Art Nouveau structure from 1883 with iron imported from Europe, sits along the Rio Negro and fills with stalls of exotic fruits, medicinal herbs, fresh fish and indigenous crafts.

The route also passes through Jefferson Péres, a newer entertainment district built where informal settlements once stood, and takes in the historic core where you can see the layers of Manaus's past. A stop at Mirante Lúcia Almeida, opened in April 2024, offers panoramic views of the Rio Negro and the Meeting of the Waters. Your guide provides context for each site: the architectural details, the history of the rubber boom, the role these landmarks played in shaping the city. The whole experience moves at a pace that lets you absorb the stories without rushing.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, and the tour operates in English, Spanish or Portuguese depending on your preference. Groups of up to three travel in a private car. If your party is larger, you'll have a van for up to twelve passengers. You'll need moderate fitness to manage the walking and stairs, and the dress code is smart casual. A minimum of two people per booking is required.
