The experience
The tour starts at the Adolpho Lisboa Municipal Market, a centennial iron structure built in Art Nouveau style on the banks of the Rio Negro. From there you move through Sete de Setembro, the main avenue of the historic center, to reach Rio Negro Palace. The Indian Museum holds over a thousand pieces (weapons, musical instruments, clothes and domestic utensils) collected from Salesian missions and representing the way of life in Upper Rio Negro villages, including the Yanomami and Tukano peoples. You'll also pass the Provincial Mansion on Police Square and Largo de São Sebastião before arriving at Teatro Amazonas, the 1896 opera house that symbolizes Manaus's rubber-boom wealth and Belle Époque grandeur.
Entry to Teatro Amazonas and the Indian Museum is included, as is hotel pickup and drop-off. Your guide speaks English or Portuguese and provides context on the city's history, culture and architecture throughout the 3.5-hour route. The tour suits all fitness levels, though opening hours vary: Teatro Amazonas closes at 2pm on Sundays and is shut Mondays; the Indian Museum closes at noon on Saturdays and is closed Sundays; the market operates until noon on Sundays and holidays. If a venue is closed when you arrive, that stop is skipped rather than rescheduled.
