The experience
The trek starts at Pântano do Sul, a traditional fishing neighborhood on Joaquina Beach where local restaurants line the shore. From there, the 6km route climbs through Atlantic Forest toward Morro da Coroa, an ancient volcano and the city's most photographed natural landmark. Your guide (fluent in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and other languages) points out the forest's ecosystem and wildlife as you move through the terrain. Midway up, you stop at the Morro da Coroa lookout to photograph the coastline and take in the views.
The trail descends to Lagoinha do Leste, a remote beach backed by a lagoon where the water stays warmer than the ocean. This is where the day opens up: you swim, wade in the lagoon, and rest on the sand. The lagoon itself is small and sheltered, a pocket of calm distinct from the wilder beach beyond it.
The return follows one of two paths. When sea and weather conditions permit, local fishermen operate a boat service back to Pântano do Sul, giving you a different view of the island's southern coast from the water. If conditions don't allow it, you hike back via a 2km trail through the forest. Either way, you finish where you started. The tour runs 6 to 7 hours total and includes a first aid kit, adventure insurance, and digital copies of the photographs taken along the way.
