The Experience

The morning pickup takes you straight to Praia do Guriú, where the Jericoacoara west coast tour begins. From there it's a short drive to Praia do Mangue Seco, about 5km away, where you stop to take photos and let the landscape settle in — the light is still low and the beach is quieter than the main strip. The real shift happens when you reach the Guriú River and board a small ferry to cross into the mangroves. It's not a long crossing, but it changes the whole feel of the day. The water is still, the trees close in, and your guide will point out the mangrove ecosystem — this is where seahorses live if you decide to add that optional boat ride. Most people do it. The water is shallow and clear enough that you actually see them.

After the mangroves, you get back in a 4x4 and drive 10km into the dunes. This is where the tour shifts from scenic to physical. The Camocim Dunes are steep — real descents and ascents, not gentle rolls. The vehicle climbs and drops, and you feel every meter of it. The wind picks up out there, and the sand is bright enough that sunglasses aren't optional. It takes maybe 45 minutes to an hour depending on the route, and then you arrive at Lagoa Grande. The lagoon sits between the dunes, and the water is calm and warm. If you want to try the zip line or skibunda (a kind of sand sled), you can book those on the day — they're paid separately, but the setup is right there, and most people who came for the dunes end up doing at least one.

The whole experience moves fast. You're not sitting in one place long enough to get bored, and you're not rushed either. Your guide handles the ferry timing and the 4x4 route, so you don't have to think about logistics or whether you're going the right way. The Jericoacoara National Park entrance is included, which means you skip the gate line. Infants can come along as long as they sit on an adult's lap, and the tour works for most fitness levels — the dune ride is bumpy but not technical, and the mangrove crossing is gentle.
