The experience

The boat picks you up at your Angra hotel and heads straight to the water. Once onboard, the professional crew takes over the sailing so you're free to move around deck, soak in the sun and watch the islands come into view. You're not following a fixed schedule: the guide shows you the options and you choose which stops matter most, whether that's the Blue Lagoon for diving, Lagoa Verde's calm green waters for snorkeling with small fish, or Praia da Feiticeira with its waterfall and rocky shallows where turtles gather.

The barbecue happens mid-day, usually anchored at Japariz Beach where you can eat on deck or wade ashore. The spread includes sirloin cap, sausage, garlic bread, curd cheese, cold cuts and bread rolls. Drinks run the full range: beers (Eisenbahn and Heineken), gin, vodka, Red Bull, tonic, soft drinks and juices, plus mineral water and ice. Snorkeling gear is onboard if you want to go under. Floating accessories let you drift and drift without effort.

The boat size matters for the feel of the day. Six seats is intimate; ten is a small group; fifteen fills the boat but still keeps it private to your party. The crew speaks English, Spanish and Portuguese, and they're handling all the navigation and the music. You're just deciding where to stop next and how long to stay. By late afternoon the private vehicle is waiting to take you back to your hotel in Angra.
