The experience

After pickup at your hotel, you'll drive into Iguassu National Park and walk the trails and boardwalks facing the falls for 40 minutes to an hour, with panoramic views of both the Brazilian and Argentine sides. The 275 waterfalls that make up Iguassu produce an average flow of 1.8 million cubic meters per second: enough to create a mist cloud visible from kilometers away. Devil's Throat, the largest single waterfall at 90 meters high, anchors the Brazilian viewpoint.

Next comes the Macuco Safari: a three-kilometer journey through the jungle in open jeep-towed wagons, where your guide points out orchids, centenarian trees, and wildlife. You'll hike an optional 600-meter trail to Macuco Falls (about 20 meters high), then board an inflatable bi-motor boat at the river docks. The boat travels upriver to the base of Devil's Throat, where the captain maneuvers close enough for a refreshing waterfall shower. Bring a towel and dry clothes, as everyone ends up wet. The boat ride lasts roughly an hour and twenty minutes total for the Macuco portion.

After the Macuco Safari, you're free to explore the park on your own before returning to your hotel. The Bird Park sits at the park entrance and features hundreds of native and exotic birds, reptiles, caimans, marmosets and butterflies in walk-through aviaries and jungle trails. The helicopter flight, approximately 10 minutes, gives a completely different perspective of the waterfalls from above and is included in the tour.
