The Experience
The trek starts with a car ride at 8 a.m. from the town to Guinea, where the Pati trail begins. You walk across the Gerais do Vieira—rolling grasslands cut by rivers and waterfalls—and stop to swim at Cachoeira dos Cristais before continuing along the Trilha dos Tropeiros. This ridge walk opens onto views of the Serra do Sincorá, where the vegetation shifts to rupestrian field dotted with orchids and insectivorous plants; saw-footed hawks often hunt in pairs overhead. By evening you reach a native house in the upper Pati, where you sleep and eat dinner made from local ingredients.
Day two is the shortest walk but the most vertical: a 9-kilometer round trip up Morro do Castelo to a quartzite cave at 1,470 meters. You cross the cave with a flashlight to an observation point that looks down into Pati de Baixo—the view across the valley is the kind that stops conversation. Lunch happens there. On the way back down you bathe at Funis Waterfall and return to the native house for dinner and sleep.
The final day is the longest walk, 22 kilometers through the general areas of Rio Preto to Cachoeirão do Pati, a waterfall and viewpoint where the landscape opens toward the mountains of the Empire. You may see the hummingbird with a red tie, endemic to Chapada, and fern plants that have existed since prehistoric times. After lunch and the walk back, you have dinner at the native house and one last night before the return journey.

Is this one for you?Three days means you commit to the full arc of the valley—the ridge walk on day one, the cave and observation point on day two, and the longest waterfall on day three—without rushing any of it. If you have only two days or need to return to a town each night, this trek does not fit; if you can spend three nights away from a city and walk uphill on rocky ground, the native houses and the meals cooked there make this version different from a hotel-based alternative.
