Our guide, Rafa, greeted us with this calm energy and a thick regional accent that made me feel like I’d landed somewhere real, not just another tourist spot. He laid out these laminated cards showing all the fish and turtles we might see. The names were in Portuguese and English — I tried to say “tartaruga” but totally mangled it. Rafa just grinned.
The walk down to the beach was short but sweet — maybe six or seven minutes? We passed through this tangle of native shrubs that smelled kind of sharp and earthy after last night’s rain. There were two older ladies in our group who took it slow, stopping to point out some tiny yellow flowers peeking out from the sand. At one point we hit a lookout where you could see the water already shining blue under the sun. It’s hard not to stop for photos (I did).
At the shore, they handed out all the snorkel gear — mask, vest, even these lightweight lycra shirts so you don’t roast in the sun. I fumbled with my mask strap (classic) but nobody rushed me; one of the team just helped me adjust it without making a big deal. Once we got into the water… well, suddenly there was this hush except for our own splashing and muffled laughter through snorkels. The first turtle glided by so close I could see its shell pattern — honestly, I still think about that moment when things get noisy back home.
Afterward they offered fresh water showers right on the beach. My hair was full of salt and my face felt tight from sun and sea — not glamorous but real, you know? They sent us GoPro videos later that week; my attempt at waving underwater looked ridiculous but made everyone laugh at dinner that night.
