The experience

The Zambezi Sunset Cruise opens the tour on arrival day: a 2.5-hour float downriver where hippos, crocodiles, buffalo and elephants drink at the banks while birds work the waterline against the African skyline. Snacks, beer, wine and soft drinks are on board. Your guide then drives you to Shearwater Explorers Village for the night.

Day two is built around Victoria Falls itself. An 8am guided walk takes you through the rainforest for 2.5 hours, moving through the spray and mist as your guide explains the geology and the local history: Mosi oa Tunya, the Smoke that Thunders. Lunch follows at the Lookout Cafe, a restaurant perched on the edge of the Batoka Gorges with views straight down the Zambezi River and the iconic bridge. Then you board a helicopter for an aerial circuit of the falls and the gorge below, a perspective no ground-level walk can match. Overnight at Shearwater again.

Day three is the crossing. A transfer takes you from Victoria Falls to Kasane, Botswana, where you stay at Travelodge Hotel. Day four is the full Chobe experience: a morning game cruise along the Chobe River, lunch at Chobe Safari Lodge, then an afternoon in an open 4X4 safari vehicle hunting the big five across the park. Elephant herds are the signature here. The park holds some of the largest concentrations in Africa. You're back at the hotel by 4:30pm. On day five, a final transfer takes you to either Kasane or Victoria Falls airport.

Is this one for you?Five days is long enough to move between two countries and see both the falls and the wildlife without rushing the Chobe safari. A single day there would leave you watching game from a vehicle for only a few hours. This length rules out a quick in-and-out, and it leaves no room for a third destination, so book this if Chobe and Victoria Falls are your priorities and you have the time to do both properly.

Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 11 years); Infant (1 to 2 years): free.

What animals will I see on the Chobe game drive?

Chobe National Park is known for large herds of elephants, and the full-day safari gives you a morning river cruise and an afternoon 4X4 drive to spot the big five (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant) along with hippos, crocodiles and abundant birdlife.

Is the helicopter tour included in the price, or do I pay extra?

The scenic helicopter flight over Victoria Falls is included in the tour package. An upgrade to a longer game flight over the surrounding wilderness is available for an additional cost.

How much time do I spend actually at Victoria Falls?

You have a full day at Victoria Falls on day two: a 2.5-hour guided rainforest walk in the morning, lunch with views of the falls and gorge, and then the helicopter flight. The walk and the flight together give you the falls from ground level and from the air.
