Explore Konjic, Tito's Bunker, and Boračko Lake
- Visit Stara Ćuprija Old Bridge
- Tour Tito's Nuclear Bunker
- Relax at Boračko Lake
The experience
The drive south from Sarajevo takes about an hour, ending in Konjic's old town where the Stara Ćuprija bridge spans the emerald-green Neretva River. Built in the 17th century and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it's the first stop: a chance to walk the stone span and photograph the river before heading underground. From there, a 15-minute drive brings you to Tito's Nuclear Bunker, a fortress carved into Zlatar mountain and designed to withstand nuclear attack. The bunker sheltered over 350 Yugoslav leaders and generals during the Cold War, and your guide walks you through the passageways and rooms, including Tito's private residence deep below the mountain.
After the bunker, the tour shifts pace with a 40-minute drive to Boračko Lake, where lush forest surrounds crystal-clear water. You can swim, walk the shoreline, or simply sit and rest after the morning's exploration. The guide can recommend traditional Bosnian dishes for lunch, which you arrange and pay for separately at the lake. The return to Sarajevo takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, so you'll be back in the city by late afternoon.
The van is air-conditioned and carries bottled water and snacks throughout the day. Children from age 3 are welcome, and the pace suits all fitness levels, though the bunker involves walking through underground passages and is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries.
