The Experience

The tour starts at 8 a.m. from Meet Bosnia Agency in central Sarajevo, though pickup from your hotel can be arranged if you request it. After a short introduction and complimentary water, you head east toward Višegrad, crossing into Bosnia's hilly borderlands. The drive itself is part of the day—the guide points out the landscape and explains what you're moving through, so the road becomes part of the story instead of something to endure.

Višegrad sits in the Drina valley, and the first stop is the Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge, a 16th-century Ottoman structure that UNESCO added to its World Heritage List in 2007. The bridge was built in 1577 by the court architect Mimar Sinan on orders of the Grand Vizier, and it's the anchor of everything you'll see today. Just beyond it lies Andrićgrad, a film set village built by director Emir Kusturica and named after Nobel Prize–winning writer Ivo Andrić, whose novel *The Bridge on the Drina* inspired the place. The village stretches from the bridge up to the Rzav River confluence and was constructed as a location for Kusturica's film adaptation of that same novel. You walk through it with your guide, who explains both the architecture and the creative vision behind it.

From there the tour crosses into Serbia and climbs toward the Šargan Pass and Mokra Gora valley, nestled between the Tara and Zlatibor mountains. The landscape opens up—the guide will point out the views of the national park and the terrain. At Šargan, you'll see the narrow-gauge railway, a famous piece of engineering that climbs steeply over a short distance, surrounded by preserved locomotives and wagons that form an open-air museum. The train ride itself is optional and costs extra (payable on the day in cash or card), so you can choose whether to add it or spend the time exploring the exhibits. Either way, you're not rushed.

The final stop is Drvengrad, an ethnic village built on a hilltop by Kusturica using authentic log cabins transported from the region—some dating back 90 years. The cabins sit on stone bases with cellars built into the hillside. This is where guests usually take a lunch break; you have free time to eat and walk around. Entry to Drvengrad costs 3 euros per person and is optional (you can decide when you arrive). The tour wraps up with a visit to Dobrun Monastery, built in 1343 and set in the mountains near Višegrad, before the drive back to Sarajevo. The whole day runs 10 to 12 hours.
